Better Magazine

Better Magazine has a variety of publications from art to poetry. Each one different in their own way and style. It has three issues all with different authors. There's a variety of gender authors, both women and men are among the authors in each of the three issues in Better Magazine. Within the Nonfiction, three of the authors, tell their story, you can either read the essay or listen to the audio essay on top of the page of each one.
In Better Magazine under Issue Two, the author Anna Journey (http://bettermagazine.org/002/annajourney.html) writes a lyric essay called Widowmaker: How to get Struck by Lightening. Not only is is a lyrical essay, but you also have it in audio essay. In this essay Anna uses flashback to when she went hiking with her mother, she uses description to describe each person's scars that experienced of getting struck by lightening. She uses segments from one paragraph into the next to allow her reader identify with why she wants to be struck by lightening.
In Issue One under Nonfiction under Laura E. Davis, it's an interview conducted by Sophie Rosenblum. The interview is about Submission Bombing, which are writers who want to be heard, submitting work to a publication. (http://bettermagazine.org/001/lauradavis.html). In Issue Three, Emily Carr writes about an eating disorder, known as anorexia nervosa. It's about not liking one's body in a modern society (http://bettermagazine.org/003/emilycarr.html).
Better Magazine has themes, many of the essays are about society, culture and the influences of culture in literacy. Out of these essays, many of the authors use segments that show flashback and change from past to present such as Membership (as the commercial says) Has it's privileges by Emily Carr. Another theme that appears in Better Magazine  are interviews which are connecting culture and literacy together. The tone of the publications are very open when it comes to talking about situations within society that matter and can give their reader's a different outlook about subjects that matter the most to the author's. Within Better Magazine there are metaphors that are used for a deeper meaning, flashbacks and usage of audio as a form of nonfiction. Some of the publications are narratives, literacy and journalistic essays. The Nonfiction essay's are lengthier opposed to the poetry and art. The type of audience Better Magazine targets a vast variety of audience because many authors focus on cultural criticism and things that they've experience that are willing to share so everyone can learn from it.  The three articles in which are mentioned above, all focus on something that does impact society, including literacy as well. It's their experience and how their experience can become a narrative, a piece of  literature that readers can relate to.

Guidelines

Better Magazine has a deadline of January 7 for submissions which are now open. This applies for the contest that Better Magazine is having for Fiction and Poetry.

Better Magazine accepts articles, reviews, interviews, artwork, video, essays, poems, stories, etc. Whatever you're proud of or excited about, they are interested in reading it.
Better Magazine is interested in work that fits into the forms, genres or subjects listed in the "Wish List."

"Wish List"- theme is to look at cultural criticism and mixed-media work. Particularly in audio and/or video essays.

Unlike many publications, Better Magazine accepts simultaneous submissions, but subscriber must let them know if a submission has been taken elsewhere.

Length Guidelines: Better Magazine is very loose when it comes to length. They suggest to see the categories for a ballpark on how much to send.

For Creative Nonfiction: Written work must be 20 double spaced pages or less. Audio or video work should not exceed 40 minutes, all must be sent through the Wish List.

There is an option for "Other"- is to submit anything other than what they request, if it's different from their requirements, in this case they have rough guidelines for writers submitting their work through the "Other" option.
