Each story had a unique message behind it. The stories were based on first person, there was dialogue whether being direct or indirect. Each character described their experience through their eye's.  These stories you have to understand what is being expressed before realizing what the true message is. The essential features are what creates the setting and background of the story being told. It is the experience of the writer that allows the reader to feel and understand what is going on within the story. The essential features are characters, the setting, experience and what is perceived from the reader that the writer is being expressed.  Some of the difference between long and short forms would be the way the story is being told, if it's short then it will go to the point and send the message across faster than a longer form. The long form explains everything that is being experienced before getting the message across to the reader.
 My list:

In " Out there" some of the essential features are the feelings, the emotions that made the character the way she is. When she says, " I'm not who everyone thinks I am," she is in a different environment, in a place where no one knows who she truly is. So just the sensation of being in a sense "free" because no one knows her story, her past, her reasons for being so far from home. She describes her emotions through everything that she has encountered through the journey of being alone on the road, far from home.

In " Some Things about that day," was a short form. One of the essential feature that this story is the setting that the character describes. From being in the waiting room with young couples, who are there with nervous feelings. The character notices the positions of the men in the waiting room, with hands covering their faces or some just staring at something on the floor. She describes the setting by the senses we have, such as hear, feel, smell, see and taste.  The setting is an essential feature because it sets an image for the reader and allow's the reader to become one with the characters experience.

In " I think I'm Musing my mind," the essential feature would be life experience because due to certain life situations. The character suffers three surgeries which he becomes one with the books that he began to read. He became so engaged with the book that he began taking the role of the characters. The message behind this story is that writing is a form of speaking.

In the "Portrait of my body," the essential feature are the metaphors being used especially in describing features of his body. But one metaphor that was interesting was, "Pianist hands, I have been told often..." meaning it's long finger's that guides the character to write. The long fingers of the characters have become a metaphor for writing. Each different body part comes down to the long fingers that do all the writing and how the character expresses himself.
